To give this book a fair rating, I had to break it into parts. The dystopian setting and overall concept? Five stars. I was completely enchanted by the world, especially the library. That atmosphere was easily my favorite part of the story.
Unfortunately, the characters and plot didn’t feel fully developed. The pacing felt choppy, and the romance came across as forced, like it was trying too hard to create a hate-to-love dynamic that didn’t naturally fit. The main characters just didn’t seem to fit, and I struggled to connect with them. It started strong, but from there it slowly went downhill for me.
The main female character was stubborn in an annoying way, and I couldn't relate to her. Some of the wording in the intimate scenes also pulled me out of the story, they felt a bit cringe at times. The best friend’s storyline didn’t fully make sense either, and I never felt emotionally attached to any of them. Except Nate, I loved him. I would absolutely read an entire book centered around his story. I love a full cast of lovable characters, it makes the experience so much better.
I am so disappointed, I had such high expectations for this book. But maybe that's the problem. Do you think that our expectations can affect how much we like a book?
